There is something so special about those first few weeks with a new baby. They’re sweet, exhausting, overwhelming, beautiful, and somehow over in the blink of an eye. As a newborn photographer serving Raleigh, Wake Forest, and the surrounding Triangle area, one of my favorite things is helping families slow down and document this little season before it changes.
If you’re expecting a baby and considering newborn photography, you probably have a million questions. When should you schedule newborn photos? What should you bring? What should everyone wear? What if the baby cries the entire time? And what if your house isn’t exactly photo-ready?
Don’t worry. I’ve got you.
Here’s everything you need to know about planning your newborn photography session in Raleigh or Wake Forest.
When Should You Book Your Newborn Photographer?

One of the biggest questions I hear is, “When should I book my newborn photographer?”
My recommendation is to reach out during your pregnancy, ideally sometime in your second or early third trimester.
You don’t have to know your baby’s exact arrival date. We simply choose an estimated due date and reserve your spot on the calendar. Once your baby arrives, we’ll adjust the session date based on when your little one is actually here.
Newborn photographers can book up quickly, especially during popular times of the year, so waiting until after your baby is born can make it more difficult to find availability.
And trust me, once that baby arrives, contacting photographers probably won’t be at the top of your to-do list!
What Is the Best Age for Newborn Photos?

There isn’t one magical age when newborn photos have to happen.
That said, I generally love photographing newborns during those first couple of weeks when they’re still very sleepy, curly, and fresh.
But here’s the important thing: don’t panic if your baby is older than two weeks.
Every baby is different, and beautiful newborn photos can absolutely be taken beyond that early window. Some babies are sleepier than others, some are more alert, and some simply have their own plans for the session.
My goal isn’t to force your baby into a particular pose or make them behave a certain way. It’s to photograph your babyand all of the little details that make this season yours.
Those tiny fingers.
The fuzzy hair.
The little stretches.
The way they fit perfectly against Mom or Dad’s chest.
Those are the things you’ll want to remember.
What If My Baby Comes Early or Late?

This is completely normal!
When you book your newborn photography session, we’ll use your due date as a placeholder. Once your baby arrives, you’ll let me know, and we’ll find a date that works.
Babies don’t exactly follow calendars, so there is always some flexibility built into my newborn schedule.
And if your baby decides to make a very early or very late entrance? We’ll figure it out.
Should You Choose an In-Home Newborn Session?

One of the things I love most about newborn photography is the option to photograph your family right at home.
There is something incredibly meaningful about documenting your baby in the place where you brought them home, where you spent those middle-of-the-night feedings, where you learned how to be a family of three, four, five, or six.
An in-home newborn session is also incredibly convenient for new parents.
You don’t have to pack up the baby, load everyone into the car, remember the diaper bag, and attempt to arrive somewhere on time.
Instead, you stay home.
We can use beautiful natural light, cozy corners, your nursery, your bedroom, the living room, or wherever your family naturally spends time together.
And no, your house does not need to be perfect.
I promise.
I am not coming to photograph your house. I’m coming to photograph your family.
We can move a few things, clear a small area, and find the pockets of your home with the best light.
If you’re considering an in-home newborn session, I have an entire guide dedicated to the benefits of choosing to photograph your newborn at home.
What Should We Wear for Newborn Photos?

This is another question I get all the time.
My favorite newborn photography wardrobe is simple, comfortable, and neutral.
Think:
- Soft creams
- Warm whites
- Beige and taupe
- Soft gray
- Muted earth tones
- Simple textures
- Comfortable dresses
- Cozy sweaters
- Bare feet
You don’t need everyone to match perfectly. In fact, I usually prefer when everyone coordinates rather than wears identical outfits.
The goal is for your clothing to complement your family and the environment without becoming the main focus of the photograph.
And please don’t feel like you need to buy an entirely new wardrobe for your newborn session.
I am happy to help you choose outfits from things you already own, and we can always talk through what will photograph best.
Can Siblings Be Included in Newborn Photos?

Absolutely!
If your new baby has big brothers or sisters, I definitely want to include them.
Some of my favorite newborn photographs are the ones that show those first interactions between siblings.
Sometimes they’re sweet and cuddly.
Sometimes they’re curious.
Sometimes they’re completely uninterested in the baby.
And honestly? I love all of it.
Your older children don’t need to sit perfectly still and smile at the camera. We’ll give them opportunities to interact naturally with their new sibling and capture the relationship as it really is.
Those photographs become even more meaningful as the kids get older.
Can Parents Be in the Photos Too?

Please, please, please get in the photographs.
I know it can be tempting to say, “I’m not ready to be photographed. I haven’t slept. I don’t feel like myself yet.”
I hear you.
But someday, your children will look at those photographs and they won’t see whether your hair was perfect or whether you had gotten enough sleep.
They’ll see you holding them.
They’ll see how tiny they were in your arms.
They’ll see the way you looked at them.
So even if you don’t feel camera-ready, I want you in the photographs.
You don’t have to know how to pose. That’s my job.
What Happens If My Baby Cries?
This might be the biggest fear parents have before a newborn session.
“What if the baby cries the whole time?”
Then we take a break.
Seriously.
Your baby is in charge.
Newborn sessions are relaxed and flexible. If your baby needs to eat, we stop and feed them. If they need a diaper change, we change them. If they need to be held, we hold them.
There is no stopwatch running.
Some babies sleep through most of their session.
Some babies want to be awake and take everything in.
Some need lots of snuggles.
And some let us know very clearly that they are not interested in our plans.
That’s okay.
Some of the most beautiful images come from those unscripted moments.
How Long Does a Newborn Photography Session Take?
I don’t like rushing newborn sessions.
Depending on your baby, your family, and the flow of the day, sessions can anywhere from 45 minutes to a few hours.
That may sound like a long time, but newborn photography isn’t about rushing through a checklist of poses.
There is time for feeding, changing, soothing, cuddling, and simply letting your baby be a baby.
The slower pace allows us to create a relaxed experience for everyone.
Especially Mom and Dad.
What Should You Do to Prepare for Your Newborn Session?

The best preparation is actually pretty simple.
Feed your baby when they are hungry.
Have plenty of diapers nearby.
Keep a pacifier handy if your baby uses one.
And most importantly, don’t stress.
You do not need to deep-clean your entire house before I arrive.
You do not need to make your toddler behave perfectly.
You do not need to have everything figured out.
You’re bringing your new baby home. This is real life.
That’s what I want to document.
What Makes Newborn Photography in Raleigh So Special?

Living in the Raleigh and Wake Forest area means we get to enjoy beautiful surroundings year-round, but newborn photography doesn’t have to depend on the weather.
That’s one of the reasons I love in-home newborn sessions so much.
Whether your baby arrives in the middle of a hot North Carolina summer, during the beautiful colors of fall, or in the quieter winter months, your home gives us a comfortable, meaningful setting for your session.
And if you prefer an outdoor or studio setting, we can talk about what works best for your family and the type of images you’re envisioning.
Your Newborn Photos Don’t Have to Be Perfect

If I could leave you with one thing, it’s this:
Your newborn photos don’t need to be perfect to be meaningful.
Your baby might cry.
Your toddler might refuse to cooperate.
Your house might have laundry sitting on the stairs.
You might feel tired.
You might not feel like yourself yet.
And that’s okay.
Because these photographs aren’t really about perfect poses or perfectly styled rooms.
They’re about remembering what it felt like to have this tiny person in your arms.
They’re about documenting the people who were there.
They’re about remembering how small their fingers were and how they curled into your hand.
They’re about preserving a season that feels like it will last forever—but somehow doesn’t.
That’s what I love most about being a Raleigh newborn photographer. I get the privilege of stepping into families’ lives during one of their most important transitions and giving them photographs they’ll have long after those newborn days are gone.
Frequently Asked Questions About Newborn Photography
How far in advance should I book a newborn photographer in Raleigh?
I recommend reaching out during your pregnancy, ideally in the second or early third trimester. We’ll reserve your session around your due date and finalize the exact date after your baby arrives.
What if my baby is older than two weeks?
That’s completely fine! While those first couple of weeks can be ideal for sleepy newborn photographs, beautiful images can be created at many different ages.
Do you offer in-home newborn photography in Raleigh and Wake Forest?
Yes! In-home newborn sessions are a wonderful option for families who want a relaxed, personal experience without having to leave home with a brand-new baby.
Do siblings and parents have to be included?
No, but I strongly encourage it. Your baby is becoming part of your family’s story, and documenting those relationships is one of the most meaningful parts of a newborn session.
What if my baby won’t sleep?
That’s okay! We follow your baby’s lead. Awake images, feeding moments, cuddles, and little expressions can all become beautiful parts of your gallery.
What should I bring to a newborn photography session?
For an in-home session, you really don’t need much. Have diapers, feeding supplies, and anything your baby normally needs nearby. I’ll take care of the photography details.
Do I need to clean my house before an in-home newborn session?
Absolutely not! We’ll focus on areas with beautiful natural light and make small adjustments as needed. Your home is where your family lives, and I want your photographs to feel authentic to this season.
