A Joyful Fall Family Session at the NC Museum of Art | Raleigh Family Photographer

There is something about early fall in North Carolina that makes family photos feel extra special.

The golden light, summer still lingering a little but cooler temperatures starting to creep in, and the beautiful outdoor spaces around Raleigh create the perfect backdrop for photographs that feel warm, natural and full of life.

For this fall family session at the NC Museum of Art, I photographed a family with three boys under 10—and if there is one thing I hope you take away from this gallery, it is this:

Family photos do not have to mean standing still and smiling at the camera.

In fact, with young kids, some of my favorite images happen when we stop worrying about getting the “perfect picture” and simply let them be kids.

Family Photos That Feel Like Your Family

Three boys under 10 means there is plenty of energy, personality and movement—and that is exactly what I want to capture.

Rather than expecting everyone to stand in one spot and smile perfectly, I like to create opportunities for families to interact naturally. We walk, explore, play, snuggle, laugh and let the kids do what they naturally do.

Some of the best photographs from a family session aren’t the perfectly posed portraits.

They’re the moments in between.

A little brother making everyone laugh.

Parents pulling their kids in for a hug.

Kids running ahead.

A spontaneous smile.

The way siblings interact when they forget the camera is even there.

Those are the photographs that bring you right back to this particular season of childhood.

Why the NC Museum of Art Is One of My Favorite Raleigh Family Photo Locations

The North Carolina Museum of Art is such a versatile location for family photography in the Raleigh area.

The grounds offer a beautiful combination of architecture, sculpture, open fields, pathways and natural scenery, which means we can create a gallery that feels varied without having to spend the entire session driving from one location to another.

It is especially beautiful in the fall when the landscape begins to change and the light gets that gorgeous warm, late-afternoon glow.

For families with young children, I also love having room to move.

Instead of keeping little ones in one tiny area, we can explore the grounds and let the session unfold naturally. That movement often helps children relax—and once they’re comfortable, their personalities really start to shine.

You Don’t Have to Be “Good at Photos”

One of the things I hear most often from parents is:

“My kids aren’t going to cooperate.”

Or:

“My kids are terrible at pictures.”

Or even:

“We need to practice smiling!”

Please don’t.

You don’t need to prepare your children to be photographed.

And you definitely don’t need to spend the week before your session reminding them to smile.

My job is to create an environment where they can relax and be themselves.

Sometimes that means we start with a few more traditional family portraits while everyone is getting comfortable. Then we move, play and interact. Sometimes we take a break. Sometimes the kids need to run.

And sometimes the photograph you didn’t plan at all ends up being the one you love the most.

When I photograph families, my goal isn’t simply to document what your family looked like this year.

I want to document what your family felt like.

The chaos.

The connection.

The belly laughs.

The little personalities.

The way your children fit into your arms.

The way siblings interact with one another.

The tiny details that are so easy to forget as the years move quickly.

Those are the photographs you’ll come back to.

Because someday, these three boys won’t be this little anymore.

They won’t run quite as fast.

They won’t all fit in Mom and Dad’s arms.

And they certainly won’t look exactly like this again.

That is why I believe family photography should be about more than creating a pretty picture.

It should preserve a little piece of this season of your family’s life.

Planning Your Raleigh Fall Family Session

If you’re looking for a Raleigh family photographer for fall photos, the NC Museum of Art is one of the many beautiful locations we can consider.

Your session can be relaxed, playful and completely personalized to your family.

You don’t need matching outfits.

You don’t need perfectly behaved children.

You don’t need to know what to do in front of the camera.

You just need to show up ready to spend some time together.

I’ll take care of the rest.

If you’re looking for family photography in Raleigh, Wake Forest, Cary or the surrounding Triangle area, I’d love to create a gallery that feels like your family—not a collection of stiff poses, but photographs filled with connection, personality and genuine joy.
